Astronomy Picture of the Day!

Shiny NGC 253, sometimes called the Silver Dollar Galaxy, is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible - and also one of the dustiest. First swept up in 1783 by mathematician and astronomer Caroline Herschel, the dusty island universe lies a mere 10 million light-years away in the southern constellation Sculptor. About 70 thousand light-years across, NGC 253 is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies, the nearest to our own Local Group of Galaxies. In addition to its spiral dust lanes, striking tendrils of dust seem to be rising from the galactic disk in this gorgeous view. The high dust content accompanies frantic star formation, giving NGC 253 the designation of a starburst galaxy. NGC 253 is also known to be a strong source of high-energy x-rays and gamma rays, likely due to massive black holes near the galaxy's center.

I find it so amazing how we are able to describe these galaxys from where we are in the universe, because I sat here the other night and I thought to myself, "wow, this universe is so huge and so vast that there is just no way we are alone in the universe."  After that though, I just stopped because then i would start thinking deeper about religion and all that and I hate doing that to myself.  However its vastness is a concept that we have yet to grasp in greater knowledge.  Right now we can only go by our educated guesses.  Good shit though.

Thanks!  I really feel kinda bad about putting up so many Astronomy pictures and stuff without actually writing my own blog posts.  Its just been really hectic here at work lately so I don't really have the time to write as much as I would like.  I'm really glad that somebody likes these though.  :)

I know you hate astronomy and all...

but this one is rad.

Yeah it is...I like how serene a galaxy looks just floating around in empty space.  There really is no way to put it into perspective either, which is totally mindblowing.  Seventy thousand lightyears across...just amazing.  Seventy thousand goddam lightyears  That's ridiculously big.

Mindblowing indeed.  I feel the same about being underwater (deep, deep down) that you do about space.  Meaning I hate it.  Not really.  I love it so much I can't get enough.  I hope to feel that kind of peace someday, but it'll probably happen after I die.
