On Saturday, my brother and I made the trip down to the CT shoreline for my Aunt Judy's 70th birthday party. It was nice. Beautiful weather and some beers while sitting on the porch all day. Super.
Anyways, the funny part of the story just got relayed to me this morning. A few weeks ago, my dad was in town and had a gift for us to give to Judy. It was an apron with some witty saying printed on it. Whatever. We put it in one of those fancy gift bags with some tissue paper and that was it. Done and done.
So, this morning I get a call from my father. After the usual questions pertaining to my enjoyment of the event, he asks who wrapped Judy's present. I told him that I did - well, not 'wrapped', I told him - I just put it in a gift bag with some tissue paper.
He tells me that Judy called him this morning to thank him for the apron and the gloves. She really liked both of them. I was immediately confused. What gloves? We didn't give her gloves, just the apron.
Apparently, he also thought it was weird that we would supplement his apron gift with a pair of gloves, so he asked her about them. She said that they said 'Rawlings' on them.
Then it dawned on me. My brother and I had played softball the night before and apparently his batting gloves had gotten blown into the gift bag from the backseat of my car (the gift bag was on the floor, and the batting gloves were on the seat right above them). We were driving down the highway at 80 m.p.h. and there was definitely enough wind to blow them down into the bag.
My dad and I were fuckin' dying laughing on the phone. I wish I could've seen her face as she opened up her gift bag. "Oh, an apron! That's nice. What else is in here? Uhhh...some ratty gloves. Hmmm...ok". LOL! Kyle's friggin' batting gloves are ratty as hell after years of baseball. Practically falling apart and dirty as hell. On top of that, my aunt is 70 friggin' years old. I bet my uncle Doug busted a gut laughing at the situation.
So, the moral of the story is this: You can give anything you goddam please to people for their birthday and they will thank you for it and tell you they like it no matter what.
